Background of the Study

Disaster simulation training is an essential tool for improving the preparedness of healthcare professionals in responding to mass casualty events and other emergencies. By simulating real-life scenarios, disaster drills help nurses and other healthcare providers develop critical skills, such as triage, teamwork, and rapid decision-making under pressure (Hassan et al., 2023). In Niger State, particularly at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Minna, the increasing frequency of disasters, including natural and man-made events, underscores the need for healthcare workers to be adequately prepared to respond effectively (Jibril et al., 2024). Simulation training is an effective method for enhancing the emergency response skills of nurses, ensuring they are better equipped to manage real-life crises.

Although disaster simulation training has been widely implemented in other regions, there is limited research evaluating its impact on nurses' emergency response skills in Minna, Niger State. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of disaster simulation training in improving nurses' preparedness and emergency response skills at the Federal Medical Centre, Minna.

Statement of the Problem

Nurses' ability to respond to disasters is critical for saving lives and minimizing injuries. However, the level of preparedness among nurses at the Federal Medical Centre, Minna, may be inadequate, given the lack of regular and effective disaster simulation training. This gap in training may negatively impact emergency response outcomes during actual disasters. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of disaster simulation training in improving the emergency response skills of nurses at FMC Minna.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of disaster simulation training on nurses' emergency response skills at the Federal Medical Centre, Minna.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of disaster simulation training in improving nurses' knowledge of disaster management protocols.
  3. To identify challenges nurses face in applying disaster response skills during actual emergency situations.

Research Questions

  1. How does disaster simulation training impact nurses’ emergency response skills at FMC Minna?
  2. To what extent does disaster simulation training improve nurses’ knowledge of disaster management protocols?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in applying disaster response skills during real-life emergencies?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Disaster simulation training significantly improves nurses' emergency response skills at FMC Minna.
  2. Nurses who participate in disaster simulation training demonstrate better knowledge of disaster management protocols than those who do not.
  3. Nurses face significant challenges in applying disaster response skills during actual emergencies despite simulation training.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses at the Federal Medical Centre, Minna, evaluating their preparedness and emergency response skills before and after participating in disaster simulation training. Limitations may include the difficulty in controlling for all variables that influence nurses' performance during actual disasters and the availability of resources for comprehensive training.

Definitions of Terms

  • Disaster Simulation Training: A structured training program designed to mimic real-life disaster scenarios, helping healthcare providers practice emergency response skills.
  • Emergency Response Skills: The ability to act effectively in crisis situations, including triage, providing immediate care, and coordinating with other responders.
  • Preparedness: The state of being adequately trained and resourced to respond to emergency situations.
